Thematic Areas: Governance
Good governance is key to the success of any institution regardless of the sector it works in. The strategic planning processes undertaken by the Institute have a strong focus on governance structures and mechanisms to ensure that the plans developed are supported by appropriate governance mechanisms. This process was also undertaken when establishing inclusive governance mechanisms for the Youth Opportunities Fund at all levels.
Current activities include:
- SNV Kenya: Design of governance and management of the Kenya Local Capacity Development Facility (LCDF) and selection of co-implementing organisations.
Past projects undertaken include:
- Coordination of research and publication project on building advisory practices including in local governance, in Tanzania, Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda and Rwanda, with publication of “Strengthening Local Governance: finding quality advisory approaches” (SNV, Sept.’04);
- Coordinated workshop on “Mainstreaming community-driven development and multi-stakeholder governance at local level” for SNV;
- Facilitated a multi-stakeholder Committee addressing issues of management surrounding the Massai Mara Ecosystem;
- Training of local authorities in five Kenyan districts on participatory planning for peace and development;
- Facilitating strategic planning, organizational capacity assessment and development of resource mobilization strategies for Association of European Parliamentarians for Africa (AWEPA, Aug.’06);
- Making operational the UN-HABITAT Opportunities Fund for Urban Youth Led Development- NI was charged with the operationalization of the agreed fund, worked to put in place the modalities necessary for the efficient operation of the fund. NI also worked to promote the fund amongst target beneficiaries and mobilize additional resources to ensure that the fund achieves the intended outcomes;
- Support to GPI advocacy and documentation October 2007;
- Development of five case studies on initiatives focused on local governance, private sector development and organizational capacity building (SNV-Kenya, Nov-Dec’05);
- Assessment and publication on community-based resource management initiative in Western Kenya, the Rabuor Sinaga Area Development Trust established to mobilize financial and human resources to provide rural electrification, water supply, health and education services and other facilities (UNESCO, May-Sept’05) and
- Capacity development for beneficiary-driven management of fair-trade community fund (Redlands Roses Max Havelaar Welfare Association, 2004-05)
- Evaluation of EC Support to the Transitional Federal Parliament of Somalia, Parliament of Somaliland and the State Parliament of Puntland (AWEPA).
