Thematic Areas: Education
The importance of improving education access and attainment is most evident in developing countries. It is a means to alleviate poverty and engineer social change. Education has a fundamental role to play in personal and social development; it is a ladder that can be used to climb out of poverty, exclusion, ignorance, oppression and war. The children and youth of our times, who will take over from today's adults, need to be equipped with knowledge to usher in a better future. Within this field NI has been involved with the evaluation, documentation and publication/dissemination of best practices, establishment of organisational think tanks and capacity building initiatives.
Current activities include:
- Consolidation of a programme strategy to guide UNESCO’s Regional Programme of Education For Emergencies and Reconstruction (PEER)
Past projects undertaken include:
- Schools as Centres of Care & Support project: As part of our institutional capacity development support, NI has worked with the Schools as Centres of Care and Support in South Africa, Swaziland and Zambia (Media in Education Trust, Mar-July’08) conducting organizational, programme and project evaluations;
- Consolidation of Strategic Plan for University of Nairobi Department of Meteorology, aimed at establishing a WMO-UNESCO centre of excellence for training and research in meteorology, hydrology and oceanography (UNESCO, 2005); and
- Assessment and publication of a Community Education Initiative in three districts in Kenya (ActionAid Kenya, 2003)
